This project is aimed at running open meetings within the Deaf Community about mental health, seeking users and carers views on mental health issues and sharing the information gleaned with mainstream health providers. There are similar HDM events held in England namely London, Newcastle and Manchester. They are well attended by their local deaf communities. It would benefit deaf people and provider services if HDM could be established in the central belt in Scotland using Edinburgh as a main base. The open meetings will draw on experience from the events in England, be culturally sensitive, and focus on topics suggested at the inital open meetings. The event organiser will invite lay deaf people with appropriate personal experiences and professionals who work in Deafness and Mental Health. All meetings will use sign language interpreters and electronic notetakers. and will be held every other month.
