Early Diagnosis of Paracetamol Toxicity

Organisation : University of Edinburgh
Grant Amount : £ 19,727

Paracetamol poisoning produces a large workload for NHS Lothian (approximately 1000 hospital admissions/year) and is the leading cause of acute liver failure, often in young people who impulsively overdosed at a moment of acute emotional crisis. We have formed a multi-disciplinary team to improve the care of these patients by developing early diagnostic tests for paracetamol-induced liver damage. We have discovered a new blood marker (a ‘microRNA’) and developed an innovative point of care assay. Now we wish to systematically collect samples from local patients to determine whether our test detects liver damage at the ‘front door’ of the hospital.
