The project will provide peer support for breastfeeding women in West Lothian. Recruitment of peers will be done in partnership with NHS Voluntary Services.
The project will work with maternity/health visiting colleagues to ensure women are being offered the service at the right time for them. Smartphones will allow timely and safe transfer of data and will support signposting to NHS Lothian website and other suitable websites.
Peers will provide support antenatally, in the postnatal ward and once the mum is at home. This can be face to face, by text or by phone. Providing support at these times will help to encourage discussion with antenatal women and will support postnatal women to breastfeed for as long as they wish.
We will build on the work that was done in East/Mid Lothian who received funding and trained 22 peers and we will share our work with colleagues across NHS Lothian.
