A textile artist with experience in participatory arts practice will work with community groups and collaborate with NHS managers, procurement teams, health centre staff, and the project design team to integrate two textile story panels into identified locations within the new Allermuir Health Centre.

The commissioner seeks to create an aesthetically pleasing, calming, nurturing and reassuring experience for the health centre users and staff, offering gentle, inspiring and positive distraction appropriate for all ages.

The aim for the commission is to deliver a project to enhance the patient environment through reference to local stories, bringing cultural memory of the surrounding local community, living heritage into the Centre including positive stories of wellbeing.

Each textile commission is to be durable and mounted within sealed units, constructed from materials which meet NHS infection control and health and safety requirements.

The Artist should demonstrate innovative thinking and ability with the illustration and design of narratives through textile mediums and be sympathetic to the specific environment of the community health and primary care context.

The project will progress in three stages:

1 – Research and development of outline costs and proposed project method by end August 2017

2 – Detailed design work including practical workshops September/October. Textile panels completed Nov 2017

3 – Implementation and installation of panels December 2017

Project Specifics

  • Location: New Allermuir Health Centre, EH13 9AF
  • Reporting to: New Allermuir Health Centre Arts Commissioning group
  • Project Budget is capped at £10,000 inclusive of all fees, materials, and installation.
  • Contract Start Date: August 2017 with freelance availability until December 2017


The commission will be awarded on experience, nature of previous work, methodology for undertaking this particular commission, availability and value for money.
