Using Yoga to target the specific needs of those patients identified as being on the autistic spectrum disorder and or experiencing a psychotic and non-psychotic mental illness

Organisation : Orchard Clinic, Royal Edinburgh Hospital
Grant Amount : £ 2,080
Project Dates : February to July 2019

We aim to run two 12 week blocks of yoga therapy at the Orchard Clinic, facilitated by a Yoga Therapist with several years’ experience working with people with mental health problems and challenging behaviours and past experience of working with our patient group.

Supervision sessions with the Specialist OT will ensure the instructor is fully aware of the needs of the patient group, allowing for the course to be of maximum benefit to participants. Yoga can offer a potentially effective adjunct treatment for persons with psychotic and non-psychotic mental illness (Becker, 2000).

Each course will involve 50 minute weekly sessions for up to 8 patients and will be designed specifically to tailor sessions to the needs of this population particularly considering the forensic environment and the specific needs of those patients identified as experiencing autistic spectrum disorder.
