Use of Coaguchek (Roche) for point of care INR testing

Organisation : Morningside Medical Practice
Grant Amount : £ 1,200
Project Dates : January to July 2019

The current system for patients on warfarin at Morningside Medical Practice (total number 66) is patients attend appointment for blood test with the phlebotomist which is couriered to NHS Lothian Hospital Lab with the results given to GP practice the following day, these are then discussed with the patient and appropriate amendments to warfarin dosage made.

With the introduction of CoaguChek (Roche), the INR blood test will be taken via fingerprick by the phlebotomist, the results analysed and the patient will know very quickly what changes in dosage are required. Additionally if the result is abnormal, the phlebotomist can discuss with the duty GP whilst the patient waits and get instantaneous results without relying on calling back. If then required the duty GP can also review the patient in the surgery if need be.
