The use of music therapy with patients living with advanced dementia to aid communciation, relaxation and alleviate anxiety

Organisation : NHS Lothian, Ferryfield House, Willow Ward
Grant Amount : £ 2,500

Willow ward is a 30 bed unit for individuals living with, varying levels of, advanced dementia.

Due to cognitive impairment patients are often unable to communicate and can become upset or anxious as a result.

The small grant would pay for the Music Therapist to work on the ward for a 6 month period. She would continue to engage with patients as part of small group or on a 1-1 basis. Music Therapy has been shown to promote communication and be effective to calm anxiety/ agitation.

The remainder of the requested money will buy instruments to be used during sessions which would ensure a more interactive experience.
