The Emergency Medicine Annotated Bioresource Consortium (EM-ABC): A pilot and feasability programme

Organisation : NHS Lothian
Grant Amount : £ 37,212

There is the need for a bioresource that is able to provide biological samples to researchers at the earliest stage of a patient’s acute illness. It is important that this bioresource is integrated with routine hospital data including symptoms, history, past medical information, clinical examination findings, severity of illness markers, hospital investigations, diagnosis and chronic disease data. This feasibility programme will develop the infrastructure and pilot a prospective, consecutive, emergency, bioresource that will subsequently be developed for all emergency presentations including severe sepsis, infection, toxicology and acute coronary syndrome. This unique and ground-breaking annotated bioresource will ultimately support the development of improvements in human health, more effective and consistent resource use, and provide significant NHS commercial opportunity.
