Supporting parents/carers of children and young people who use communication technology – to improve welfare and experiences

Organisation : NHS Lothian, KeyComm Resource Centre
Grant Amount : £ 13,000

Children and young people with limited or no verbal language may use high-tech communication devices to support their communication; devices such as NovaChats, Dynavoxes, Tobiis. This is known as high-tech AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).

The children are supported to use AAC by a range of professionals, and very importantly by their parents/carers.We would like to deliver evidence-based parent/carer AAC workshops across Lothian, in partnership with local Speech and Language Therapy services. We would also like to set up a parent/carer forum to learn about the specific needs and views of our parents/carers in Lothian.

The evidence predicts that this will improve important outcomes for these children and their families; in particular improving the experience that they have of these NHS-funded interventions (AAC devices and Speech and Language Therapy services).
