The CAMHS Learning Disability Intensive Treatment Service (CAMHS LD ITS) is a new innovative service that provides intensive interventions for children and young people who have a severe/moderate learning disability, autism and mental health or complex behavioural problems. It is a multi-disciplinary team comprising of Nursing, Psychology, Psychiatry, SALT and OT. This is a long term commitment from CAMHS LD in meeting the complex needs of this extremely challenging group of children. We provide a period of intensive intervention that will support families and other services to gain greater insight and understanding into the difficulties identified and to support them to implement strategies and recommendations. This assessment and treatment will take place where and whenever it is required; home, school, respite i.e. wherever the child is. This will prevent inappropriate long term admissions to hospital whilst also working with the local authority to reduce the number of children being sent to out of area residential education facilities. Our long term aim is to work jointly with all agencies involved with this client group and eventually raise the capacity throughout Lothian to meet the needs of these children and allow them to remain at home, within their local/specialist school and to continue to be part of their own community.
