Scottish Koilocyte Identification Project (SKIP)

Organisation : Scottish Cytology Training School, Department of Pathology, NHS Lothian
Grant Amount : £ 13,020

The project will assess the morphological criteria currently used in cervical cytology to define a koilocyte and validate them. This will be done by collecting a number of cases showing some or all of the features of a koilocyte. These features will be agreed on review by a number of experts and validated by testing the samples for the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV) DNA. The aims are to

• create guidelines for the identification of koilocytes for the Scottish Cervical Screening Programme

• assemble reference & training sets of validated examples of koilocytes and their mimics

• assess whether a specific HPV type (or types) is (are) more likely to be associated with one or other of the morphological features of koilocytes
