The Royal Edinburgh Hospital provides acute psychiatric and rehabilitation mental health services, including learning disabilities and dementia. There is strong evidence that exposure to greenspace has positive effects on both physical and mental health and walking is a natural, simple and free way to be physically active. Encouraging regular outdoor activity and contact with nature can bring about a range of physical, mental and social health benefits. The REH Walkways project identifies walks within the grounds of the hospital for all and these are supported by maps in the wards and in the grounds along with leaflets and ground markers to support the use of the Walkways. Following the progression of the REH Phase I re-provisioning some of the walks need to be rerouted and the maps and leaflets require updating.
