Recovery Exchange – Harm Reduction Team Peer Support, 2016

Organisation : NHS Lothian, Spittal Street Centre
Grant Amount : £ 1,000

The Low Threshold Methadone Programme is a clinic which runs at the Spittal Street Centre to manage prescribing for drug users for whom GP prescribing is not an option. The clients have complex and varied needs: many are homeless, all are categorised as high-risk injecting drug users, and some have resorted to sex work.

At the Recovery Exchange, volunteers who have achieved one year’s stable abstinence support the processes of titration, injecting equipment provision, and staff the waiting room when the clinic is open.

In addition, there is a programme of activities and therapeutic discussion groups – the groups are of a similar format to mutual aid meetings, where peer volunteers share their experiences of recovery, and give themed talks surrounding different models and aspects of recovery.
