Re-design of hospital bed features to enable safer patient handling

Organisation : NHS Lothian
Grant Amount : £ 29,653

The needs of patients are complex, requiring a bed which is reliable, easy to use and safe for caregivers and patients. Patients can require frequent repositioning for various physiological and clinical needs, which relies on caregivers providing assistance to perform tasks, often requiring the presence of 2 trained individuals. Specialist beds are provided in a hospital setting and in the community, which have a number of functions to support effective patient care. However, there are additional innovative modifications which could be introduced to increase patient and carer safety and comfort, in addition to introducing efficiencies in the number of occasions where 2 caregivers are required, thereby enabling relatives to provide care to family members in the home. This project aims to develop these concepts into feasible new product designs for implementation in a healthcare setting.
