Pan-Lothian Mentalization for People with a Diagnosis of Personality Disorder Treatment and Training Programme

Organisation : NHS Lothian, Psychotherapy Department, Royal Edinburgh Hospital
Grant Amount : £ 60,000

This proposal is targeted to meet the needs of 2 groups.

1. People with a diagnosis of Personality Disorder (PD)
– A group disadvantaged by not having equitable access to evidence based effective treatment. Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) is a proven means for improving outcomes, reducing self-harm and suicide. We would create a coherent treatment programme and ensure that those delivering it are highly trained and meet national standards.

2. Staff and carers who interact with this client group
– At present there is little training in how to work effectively with people with PD. We would deliver training that addresses this by upskilling staff and carers using MBT-skills. This will ensure consistency of approach and improve outcomes across various clinical domains this group meet on their journey and improve staff attitudes and confidence to engage productively with this group.
