Music Therapy Pilot

Organisation : NHS Lothian, Pentland Ward, Royal Edinburgh Hospital
Grant Amount : £ 2,500

Understanding individual communication abilities in dementia patients is paramount for carers and staff to have the tools to reduce that persons stress and distress and enable a true and holistic assessment and planned care. Music evokes memories that can allow care givers a glimmer into their past and helps break down the barriers of communication, especially when verbal techniques are depleted – when words fail, music can talk

This grant would pay for a music therapist to work on both wards for 12 months. This therapy would be on a 1-1 basis and group work that would help enhance staff skill sets in looking for alternative ways to aid the assessment and planned care process. This would greatly assist in failed discharge in assessment and aid reduction of distressed behaviours in complex care and aid the transition to community based care.
