Mindfulness groups and ‘mindful’ activities in the rehabilitation wards at REH

Organisation : NHS Lothian, Rehabilitation Services, Royal Edinburgh Hospital
Grant Amount : £ 3,000

Mindfulness based interventions have been shown to improve psychological conditions across a range of mental health conditions, and there has been a recent interest in mindfulness based interventions for psychotic disorders, including ‘treatment resistant’ psychosis.

As psychology provision is limited across the rehabilitation service (1.7 clinical psychologists for 3 rehab wards and community based patients), our aim is to increase capacity to implement mindfulness based interventions and to run mindfulness groups/ sessions on wards by training a small group of nursing and Occupational therapy staff in these interventions.

In addition we aim to consolidate the ‘mindful’ approach through other ward based activities – for example, a ‘mindful’ gardening group. The money requested is to train this selected group of staff.
