We propose to set up liver support groups across the Lothian region to provide peer support for those affected by any type of liver condition. Support groups have been shown to improve patient confidence and help them better manage their condition, as well as providing vital support for family, friends and carers. Groups will be closely linked to hospitals and other service providers, to ensure we link with services that will help improve the lives of liver patients and their families. At this stage we estimate around 10 groups could be established over the two year period, each supporting 15-20 people directly. Patient feedback from groups in England and Wales tells us members value the chance to meet others who share their experiences; many groups are run by volunteers with a link to liver disease and they gain enormously themselves from the chance to help others.
