Around 1400 people are admitted to hospital with stroke in Lothian annually. Many require on-going rehabilitation. Exercise training improves stroke recovery. The Scottish Government recommends that health boards work with leisure industries to develop pathways into exercise after stroke. We have trained 15 exercise professionals in Lothian as stroke specialists through a course supported by the Scottish Government. They are now providing community exercise after stroke in leisure centres. This novel project will bring exercise professionals into the acute stroke unit. We will determine whether this leads to an increase in uptake and compliance with community exercise after stroke services.
