Improving and Monitoring physical activity in children

Organisation : NHS Lothian, Physiotherapy Department, Royal Hospital for Sick Children
Grant Amount : £ 2,000

To improve and monitor activity levels in children by using activity and heart rate monitors. Patients referred for respiratory physiotherapy often have complex conaditions eg CF, bronchiectasis, asthma, sickle cell disease. These children have poor lung function, poor exercise tolerance and poor activity levels. Currently these children receive a written exercise programme and home visits to ensure the programme is being carried out. These patient groups can often be difficult to engage and compliance can be poor. ‘Polar’ have designed activity watches and heart rate monitors that are linked to apps on smart phones or tablets. We can design exercise programmes with target heart rates and give instant feedback. As patients increase their activity using this technology, it may improve lung function and exercise capacity, improve patient  compliance thereby improvng the patients’ wellbeing.
