Illuminating waterbirths: rapid prototyping and development of an illuminated mirror for waterbirths

Organisation : University of Edinburgh
Grant Amount : £ 31,684

The objective of this multidisciplinary project is to design and manufacture a prototype mirror with an integral light source suitable for use in water births that permits the individual woman to experience a better and more dignified labour, facilitated by allowing the midwife to hygienically make observations at a distance and from above the water. Currently, no such product exists. Midwives who have been canvassed for their views believe that there is gap in the market for a good-value product that is fit-for-purpose, and a number of online retailers have expressed an interest in supplying the mirror along with the pool birthing kit. To achieve our objective we will i) undertake a scoping exercise with midwives and women to identify the ideal product specification; ii) develop and iii) test prototype(s) based on these specifications suitable for up-scaling for commercial manufacture.
