We cannulate on a daily basis and administer IV drugs and insert IV lines. We have challenging patients that from time to time we need assistance from anaesthetics to put the lines in. This is a skill that the nurses can do with the purchase of an ultrasound machine. Therefore not needing the ITU machine or anaesthetist to come to our department. We do find that the machine is not readily available and anaesthetists can be in theatre or at other emergencies. This can lead to delays in our patients receiving their treatment. We also can provide the service for all the other wards that have similar problems. All our staff had had training in this device.
