Hospital inpatient falls represent an enormous problem and are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Older people are especially at risk of falls and occur in those with cognitive impairment and poor safety awareness. Many patients in this ward will attempt to mobilise unaided or without supervision and will be at increased risk of falling. These falls cause considerable distress to patients, relatives and staff and are often a source of complaint to the health board. Identifying those at risk of falls is a recommended intervention however this can cause difficulty as the patient is often not at the bedside where a falls risk sign can be placed. To help identify the needs of patients, the wearing of a coloured, non restrictive wristband will allow for quick identification to all staff to alert them as to whether the patient is safe to mobilise independantly.
