We are applying for funding for a new element of our volunteer led CARDS service. Users of this service have Alcohol Related Brain Damage (ARBD) or are at risk of developing ARBD. This stems from a long history of alcoholism and has a host of debilitating health problems. It is possible to recover from ARBD with support and guidance but that support must be personalised to the needs of the individual and delivered with flexibility and compassion. The service is delivered by highly trained volunteers. Volunteers come from all walks of life and in the last 18 months we have been approached by, and have recruited 9 new volunteers who have recovered from an alcohol and/or substance addiction. 5 of these volunteers are ex-service users. Their first-hand knowledge and empathy is a highly effective way of supporting these vulnerable individuals.
