Beads of Courage

Organisation : Children's Clinical Research Facility, Royal Hospital for Sick Children
Grant Amount : £ 2,000
Project Dates : August 2015 to July 2016

Beads of courage (BoC) is a resilience-based intervention which was designed to strengthen and support children. The BoC project would be primarily used with the  children with chronic conditions or who have to attend the research department for a long period of time.

It has been found that BoC aids in decreasing distress and positive coping strategies. The BoC have also been found to restore a sense of self for the child facing serious/chronic illness. It also lets them tell their journey and have something that they can look back on. They get a special bead for each procedure or milestone that they experience within their treatment.

Although this has primarily been used in oncology, the beads of courage program is now spread to other departments, including ICU, NNU, Burns, Chronic Illnesses and Cardiac Units.
