A new approach to nasogastric tube (NGT) placement confirmation

The insertion of a NGT is the passage of a tube via the nostril into the stomach for food, drug or fluid administration. This is an extremely common clinical intervention; however, there is a recognised risk of misplacement into the lungs, or movement out of the stomach. Current accepted methods for testing correct NGT placement are not reliable and have resulted in signficant avoidable morbidity and mortality. The current project will gather background data needed to inform the development of a hand held analyser which will be a more specific, accurate and potentially fail safe method for testing NGT placement.
