Doors Open Day at the Astley Ainslie Hospital this weekend !

Saturday 28th September:

Capturing the Astley Ainslie Exhibition:

This exhibition will showcase photographs as part of a 5 month project led by Photographer Natalie Feather from May to September 2019. This project engaged with patients and staff who were introduced to film photography. During the course of the project participants took a range of photographs of the interior and exterior of the historic hospital buildings as well as the beautiful landscaped grounds of the hospital. Location : the Old School building.
Time: This free exhibition will be open from 12- 4pm.

The Travelling Darkroom with Photographer Natalie Feather

Make your own black & white photographs choosing from a wide selection of negatives which have been taken from around the Astley Ainslie grounds and inside the buildings. The Travelling Darkroom is a portable photographic space equipped with photographic enlarger , sink and processing equipment and red light. Great for children and adults alike to try out the magic & alchemy of the photographic process.
Location : the Old School building .
Time: These free sessions are drop-in and will take place from 12.30- 3.30pm .

Guided walks round the grounds of Astley Ainslie Hospital by the Community Engagement Group:

Participants will have the opportunity to admire the beautifully landscaped parkland feel of the site and views of the hills to the south. Learn about the history of the site from the monks of the Chapel of St Roque, caring for victims of the plague in the 13th and 14th centuries, to the building of the SMART centre for mobility technology in 2007. You will also learn about the role of the Astley Ainslie in the move from passive convalescence of patients to active rehabilitation and the introduction of Occupational Therapy.
Numbers are limited for the guided walks and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Walks take an hour approximately .
Times : 12.30 to 1.30 pm & 2.30 to 3.30pm
Meeting:  AAH café, near Canaan Lane entrance .

Cyanotype Photography in the Walled Garden at AAH with Photographer Natalie Feather

Cyanotype photographic workshops , using flowers in the AAH Walled Garden . Make your own blue photogrpah using the power of sunlight to create an outline image of a flower.
Time: These free sessions are drop-in and will take place from 12.30- 3.30pm .
Location : the Walled Garden.

Guided walks : A walk through time at the Astley Ainslie Hospital by the Astley Ainslie Community Trust

This one hour walk will be led by Dr Sara Stevenson, a cultural historian and researcher and Dr Michele Hipwell, a health psychologist (health, well-being and nature). Be prepared to be taken on a journey of the past, present and possible future of the site, combining story-telling and experiential explorations of the green spaces and landmarks.
