Several hundred Specific Funds are held by the Foundation, where donations and legacies are made, often by grateful patients and their families, to support specific wards, departments and areas of research across NHS Lothian.
In addition to an investment portfolio, the Foundation holds a small property portfolio of around £14million, mostly acquired on inception of the NHS, and concentrated around the Royal Hospital for Sick Children site at Sciennes.
Our collection of heritage art includes paintings by Scottish painters Elizabeth Blackadder, John Alexander, Allan Ramsay and William McTaggart, and silverware, sculpture and much more. Ramsay’s portrait of the 2nd Earl of Hopetoun is currently on loan to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
The stock market investments of £57m are placed by professional fund managers in a broad portfolio of shares, bonds and managed funds of companies based in both the UK and overseas. It is the Trustees’ policy that the portfolio specifically excludes investments in tobacco companies, alcoholic beverage producers and armaments manufacturers. The Trustees monitor the performance of the investments on a regular basis during the year.
